Five Animal QiGong is one of the earliest forms of Medical QiGong, created by Chinese physician and surgeon Hua Tao during the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220 CE)
Originally developed as 25 therapeutic exercises imitating the movements of 5 animals, its primary aim was to strengthen the body, enhance Qi flow, and promote longevity. The moves imitate the 5 animals - tiger, deer, bear, monkey and bird - using stretching and breathing techniques.
Each animal corresponds to specific organs and elements in Traditional Chinese Medicine, promoting physical health, mental focus and spiritual well-being.
In the 1990's, the Chinese Medical QiGong Association standardized the original the 25 move set into a 10 movement system accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels. While still retaining its traditional focus on Qi cultivation, it integrates scientific insights on biomechanics and health benefits.
Studies since the latter half of the last century have shown 5 Animal QiGong to be effective for knee osteoarthritis, Parkinson's disease, hypertension, osteoporosis, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia. It reduces stress and pain, improves lung and joint function and enhances immune function, respiratory health and overall vitality.
The classes are accessible to everyone and there are no prerequisites. You can register to attend on person or on Zoom. Recordings of classes are available for all participants to practice.
